Since the weather has been so cold it's time to begin thinking of warmer weather, and what better way than to enter the Ontario District Spring contest to be held at Global Kingdom Ministries in Scarborough in April. Entries are now open for the following contests:

EYBS Celebrates with Gordon Lightfoot

Everyone knows Gordon Lightfoot as a huge recording star, and a Canadian Legend, but most don't know him as a Barbershop Harmony Quartet Singer?  George Shields, Director Emertus of EYBS certainly does, as he has known Gord for over 60 years. Gordon attended much of the 2013 International Barbershop Convention held in Toronto, so 50 East Yorkers and friends attended the first of Gordon's four shows at Massey Hall. George went searching through his legendary archives and was able to find the original program from a Quartet Contest held 60 years ago (Nov.

When picturing a Barbershop Quartet the first thing that comes to mind (at least for myself) is a black and white 50's movie or Homer, Apu, Seymour and Barney a.k.a. The Be Sharps. While the genre itself seems to be nothing more than a fond memory, a couple of performances by the Yonge Guns, a Toronto-based a cappella group, showed me exactly how exciting and prevalent it actually is.

Toronto Northern Lights win international contest

Singing a hilarious medley of parody songs set in a vegetable garden, Toronto's Northern Lights Chorus captured the gold medal in the international barbershop chorus contest Saturday night. 

"The Age of Asparagus," "Corn Free," "Lettuce Entertain You" and "Beet It" were among the classics lampooned by the 73-member chorus, which has earned second place five times in the past.

OTTAWA, ON: More than 100 people including soloists, duets, quartets and choirs from across the province of Ontario auditioned to sing the Canadian National Anthem at the Opening Ceremony of the 2013 ISU World Figure Skating Championships® in London in March.

Border Patrol wins International Seniors Gold!

Congratulations to Border Patrol, who represented the Ontario District at the International Seniors Quartet Competition in Orlando, Florida and took home the gold, becoming the first quartet in district history to accomplish the feat.

Border Patrol, a truly International Seniors Barbershop Quartet from the Toronto and New York areas, won the gold medal Saturday, January 12 at the Annual Barbershop Harmony Society Midwinter Convention, held in Orlando Florida.
